About Corsica

Visit Corsica, one of the most beautiful islands in the Mediterranean. Corsica lies in the Tyrrhenian Sea, only 180 kms away from the French coast, 80 kms west of the coast of Tuscany and 14 kms north of Sardinia. From north to south is the island about 180 kms long and from west ot east about 80 kms. It covers about 3,352 sq miles. Corsica is one of the 26 "regions" of France. Although French is the official language, many Corsicans speak Corsican (Corsu). About half of the population of 272.000 people live in the cities Ajaccio and Bastia. Ajaccio in the soutwest is the capital of the island. It is a mountainous island, wild and rugged. The highest peak is Monte Cintu at 2710 m. The coastline is 600 miles long and has sailing ports, sea-side resorts, wild cliffs, long sandy beaches and many coves. Corsica has a mediterranean climate, which means hot dry summers and mild, rainy winters. Climate is ideal for growing olives, grapes and tangerines. It has an average of of 2793 sun hours per year, the record for France. This pleasant climate and the breathtaking mountains with its quiet villages and coastline with its crystal clear water and beautiful beaches makes it an irresistable holiday destination for western Europeans. Tourism, which plays a major role in the Corsican economy, is concentrated in the region of Porto Vecchio and Bonifacio (south of the island) and around Calvi (northwest of the island). The first colonisers of the island were from the Phoenician city of Tyre in Lebanon. After that the Greeks and Romans occupied the island. Because of the strategic position of the island in the Mediterranean it has been subject to violent conflicts for centuries, especially between Italy and France. Finally under the Treaty of Versailles in 1768 Corsica came under the rule of Freance. All the occupiers have left their marks on Corsica. The famous son of Corsica, Napoleon was born in Ajaccio.
