Crete, the southernmost island in Europe and the largest island of Greece, lies at the southern end of the Aegean Sea. It has been inhabited continuously from the Neolitic period and was the location of the Minoan civilization (ca. 300-1400 BC), the first civilization in Europe. It is a link between Asia, Africa and Europe. The island is 260 km long and from west to east and varies in width from 60 km to only 12 km (in the region of Ierapetra). It covers an area of 8261 sq. km. It consists of four prefectures: Chania, Rethymnon, Heraklion and Lasithi. Heraklion is the capital of the island, as well as the capital of the Heraklion prefecture. The population of Crete is 650.000 (2005) of which 275.000 people live in the capital Heraklion. Crete is a mountainous island and defined by three different groups of mountains. There are the Lefka Ori (the White Mountains, highest peak 2452 m), the Idi Mountains (highest peak at 2456 m. the Psiloritis) and the Dikti Mountains (up to 2148 m.). Between the mountain complexes are several small, fertile plateaus to be found like Lassithi, Omalos and Nida, caves like Diktaion and Idaion and gorges like the Imbros and Samaria gorge as well as lots of traditional villages. Don't forget to stop in one of this villages to chat with the local people, famous for their hospitality, and enjoy the delight of a Greek coffee in the kafeneio (coffee house). The coast has a shoreline of over 1000 km. Its coastline consists of long sandy beaches and rocky bays. Crete`s major tourist resorts all lie on the North-East coast between Heraklion and Agios Nikolaos with beautiful beaches, lively nightlive, all kind of watersports, windsurfing and diving. This area is also interesting for visitors who love trekking and cycling. For a quieter holiday Rethymnon and Chania are an option or the unspoilt southcoast. The climate of Crete is Mediterranean, hot and dry summers, especially on the south coast, fairly mild winters, with snow in the mountains and rain in the plains. The main sources of wealth in Crete are agriculture, especially the cultivation of the olive tree. and tourism. An abundance of wildlife, flora and fauna can be found on Crete. More than 2000 different plant species, of which 170 are native and can only be found on Crete. Crete also has a varied fauna, with several native species, like the wild goat (kri-kri) and the Cretan tree frog. Main tourist attractions in Crete include the archeological sites at Knossos, Phaistos and Gortys and many other places, like the Venetian fortress in Rethymnon, the island Spinalonga near Agios Nikolaos. Crete has everything and this makes it one of the most popular holiday destinations in Greece.
